With its long, trailing vines and glossy, succulent-like leaves, this plant brings a lush, tropical presence to interiors while offering a fascinating botanical story. Unlike flowering orchids, Vanilla Planifolia is prized for its foliage and growth habit. It thrives when given space to climb or trail. Over time and with the right conditions, mature plants may produce delicate greenish-yellow flowers, an exciting moment for patient growers. Both ornamental and intriguing, Vanilla Planifolia is perfect for plant lovers drawn to unusual varieties and slow-growing statement plants that evolve beautifully over time.

CARE GUIDE

Vanilla planifolia is a tropical climbing orchid best known for producing vanilla beans. It’s a vigorous grower that thrives in warm, humid conditions with proper support.

Follow these simple tips to keep your plant healthy and growing well:

Light

Place in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water

Water regularly, keeping the potting mix evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between watering.

Temperature

Prefers warm temperatures: 20-30°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Humidity

Enjoys high humidity (60-80%) with good air circulation.

Potting Mix

Use a free-draining orchid mix with bark and organic matter. Provide a support pole or trellis for climbing.

Fertilizer

Feed with orchid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during active growth.

Pruning

Trim to manage size and encourage branching. Remove any damaged or unhealthy growth.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years or when the potting mix starts to break down.
